Recycling

Recycling
Thanks to a federal grant, Red Rocks Amphitheatre started their recycling program in July of 2007. Through this program all glass, plastic and cardboard items are recycled through a single-stream process. When you arrive at Monolith you will find containers located at each entrance. Additionally, several containers will be added in the Upper Terrace and Underground areas to capture more recyclables. Each night (after the show is over); the trained Aramark janitorial staff will collect the remaining waste left in the “seating bowl” area and sort it accordingly. This is one of those processes that you will rarely see but is very important to overall sustainability of our event. The Red Rocks recycling program has recently become a single stream process. This year you will be able to place glass, plastic and cardboard all in the same container. Final containers are delivered to Alpine Waste in Commerce City for recycling at their “All Together Recycling Plant.”

Composting
Monolith, Red Rocks and Aramark will conduct a number of composting activities during the 2008 event. All composting will be done from a venue and concessionaire perspective due to the potential contamination rate, which must be below 2%. To adhere to these guidelines, Aramark Concessions switched several of their products such as hot dog wrappers, plastic silverware and plates to a biodegradable product in order to adhere to the composting standards. Green containers will be placed in various locations behind the scenes. A 30-yard container will house the final compostable materials (provided by Alpine Waste) and then hauled to A-1 Organics for final composting. The staff will also be composting all paper towels that are used in the restrooms during the festival. After each night of the event ARAMARK staff will sort through trash in the “seating bowl” area and parking lots to collect and separate compost/recyclables/trash and distribute them into the proper receptacles.

Energy Conservation
All Fluorescent lighting in the Visitors Center, Concession Stands and Backstage areas have been upgraded to T-8 lighting technology. In areas where possible, incandescent lighting has been converted to compact fluorescent technology. Additionally, in May of 2008 a 5kw fuel cell was installed in the Visitors Center to provide additional energy savings.

Trashbags
All trash bags on site during the Monolith Festival will be Enviro Bags. These liners are made with 90% recycled materials, 30% of which are post consumer. To help reduce the amount of trash bag consumption (usually about 250 per day), re-usable Rubbermaid containers will be used to collect trash and recyclables from the “seating bowl” are after the event.

Cleaning and Chemicals
Approximately 80% of all the cleaning agents and chemicals used at the event are Green Seal Certified. This includes Glass, Floor and surface cleaners. All soap dispensers will stock GOJO Green foaming hand soap, which is also Green Seal Certified.

Paper Products
All toilet paper dispensers have been converted to “coreless”. All paper towels and toilet paper meet EPA guidelines.

Water Conservation
Red Rocks has recently converted all toilets and urinals to “low flow.” All toilets now utilize 1.6 gallons per flush with urinals using .5 gallons per flush
