2008 Monolith Reforestation Project

In 2007, we planted 7 native Rocky Mountain Junipers (Juniperus scopulorum) inside of Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Each side of the amphitheatre is lined by a row of these Junipers and several had died due to disease and weather. The Monolith Festival staff (with shovels in hand) were joined by the great people from Friends of Red Rocks and The Park People to conduct at full 12-hour session of tree restoration. After a full 12 hour day, 4 broken shovels, a busted hose and some serious elbow grease; the 2007 Monolith Reforestation project was a resounding success. At the request of Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Denver’s Theatres and Arenas, the Monolith Reforestation project is back for another year. Dates and times will be posted in the coming weeks. If you are interested in volunteering your time to participate in the program, email volunteer@monolithfestival.com.

The process of planting trees is a large contributor to carbon reduction and carbon storage, as trees thrive on carbon dioxide for their life process. It is important for us to explain that this is not a program solely conducted to “reduce our carbon impact.” We understand the arguments and proposed adverse effects a large scale tree planting could have on the local ecology. By planting trees we are not reducing the impact, but providing a safe place for it to reside. Hopefully enough things will change in the lifetime of that tree so that when it kicks the bucket, we won’t even notice. In regards to our Reforestation Program the trees not only absorb the carbon dioxide, but they act as windscreens, absorb water run-off and provide new wildlife habitat in a barren region. Given the territory (inside of the amphitheatre) in which we conduct our program, this has is a positive ecological impact on the venue. We are content with forging a path and creating something tangible that will continue to support the environment around Red Rocks Amphitheatre for years to come.
